Result
You reach 60 in 2026: the higher 60-to-63 catch-up applies.
| Account | Limit | Catch-up | Yours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), TSP: your contributions source | $24,500 | $11,250 | $35,750 |
| 401(k) with employer money source | $72,000 | $11,250 | $83,250 |
| IRA, traditional and Roth together source | $7,500 | $1,100 | $8,600 |
| HSA (self-only) source | $4,400 | $1,000 | $5,400 |
Roth IRA contributions also phase out at higher incomes, and you can’t put more into an IRA than you earned. Every 2026 figure is on the 2026 contribution limits page.

How it works
Catch-up eligibility goes by the age you reach by 31 December, so the calculator uses the tax year minus your birth year. From 50 your 401(k) and IRA limits rise by their catch-ups; in the years you turn 60 to 63 the 401(k) catch-up is the higher one SECURE 2.0 created; from 55 an HSA allows an extra $1,000.
Every figure comes from the IRS notice or revenue procedure for the year, linked beside it. RetirementPace never estimates a limit the IRS hasn’t published.
Worked example
Someone born in 1966 reaches 60 in 2026. Their 401(k) limit is $24,500 plus a $11,250 catch-up, $35,750 in all; their IRA limit is $8,600; and with self-only HSA coverage they can put $5,400 in an HSA.
Questions
Who can make catch-up contributions?
Anyone who reaches 50 by 31 December of the year. You don’t have to be 50 when you contribute: if your 50th birthday is in December, catch-ups are allowed from January.
What is the catch-up for ages 60 to 63?
A higher 401(k), 403(b) and governmental 457(b) catch-up for the years you turn 60, 61, 62 or 63: $11,250 for 2026 instead of $8,000. From the year you turn 64 it goes back to the regular catch-up.
Do my catch-ups have to be Roth?
If your FICA wages from the employer sponsoring the plan were over $150,000 in 2025, your 2026 catch-up contributions to that plan must go in as Roth. The regular limit can still be traditional.
Is there a catch-up for IRAs and HSAs?
Yes. IRAs allow an extra $1,100 from the year you turn 50 on top of $7,500, shared between traditional and Roth IRAs. HSAs allow an extra $1,000 from the year you turn 55, as long as you are not enrolled in Medicare.
Do catch-ups count toward the overall limit?
No. The $72,000 limit on employee plus employer contributions to a 401(k) for 2026 doesn’t include catch-ups, so with a catch-up the total can be higher.
